Many of the same musicians from Walk Under Ladders return for The Key, but gone are that album's warm island airs. Instead, producer Steve Lillywhite wraps -- some might say smothers -- Armatrading's voice in sophisticated synthesizers (courtesy of Larry Fast) and punchy rock arrangements that are enervating but less inviting than her earlier work.

The album's title refers to the door key which Armatrading habitually wore around her neck at that time and which is featured in the album's photography. She is also pictured playing a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar.

All Music gave this album a low rating but with Armatrading's talent and a few real standout tracks, (Drop the Pilot, Bad Habits, I Love It (When You Call Me Names), Foolish Pride, Tell Tale), this album is a welcome addition to my collection, and.

Absolutely excellent set. I was familiar with the first album in the set and the singles from the others but really there are no bad tracks anywhere here. proof if any were needed that Joan Armatrading is a superb songwriter and performer. A gem of a package/5(54).
